Residence permits issued in the format of a sticker in the passport (according to Paragraph 78a AufenthG) will lose their validity after 31st of August 2021.

The employee (and family, if applicable) applicable) resides already in Germany and holds a residence permit.

The residence permit is issued (due to simplification of procedures) as a sticker in the passport (in German: “Klebeetikett”). 

This format will lose its validity after 31st of August 2021. By this date the residence permit needs to be converted into a residence permit in ID card format (so called eAT). Ahead of this date the application of the eAT can already be filed conditional to further requirements.

Who will need an eAT?
The eAT is a specific format for the issuance of a long-term residence permit. National visas for entry purposes have their very own format. They will be issued as sticker directly in the passport.

What is an eAT in particular?
The eAT is in ID card format. This format contains besides the biometric dates as name, date of birth, place of birth, type of residence permit (long-term residence permit, permanent residence permit etc.) and the legal basis also the nationality, gender, height and eye colour, residential address in Germany, signature of card holder, serial number and validity dates of the corresponding passport as well as a biometric picture and an automatic reading zone with the majority of the visible information.

What fees will arise for the format change?
For the support and application for the format change a fee of EUR 400 net per applicant will arise. Also additional administrative fees of EUR 67 for the issuance of the eAT will arise.
